Former Arsenal head of recruitment Sven Mislintat is interested in taking over the Liverpool sporting director role. Although there have not yet been any formal conversations, Mislintat is willing to succeed Ward when he leaves Anfield at the end of the current campaign. After leaving his position as Stuttgart’s sporting director earlier this month when his contract expired, the 50-year-old is currently taking a holiday. As a result of their time spent together at Dortmund, where he is credited with spotting Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ousmane Dembele, Mislintat is thought to have a good relationship with Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool. Between 2017 and 2019, Mislintat spent 14 months at Arsenal, where he signed players like Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira and was said to be interested in a position at Bayern Munich.
He departed Arsenal, though, after they changed their internal hiring procedures, and he spent the following three years in Stuttgart, where he was promoted back to the Bundesliga. Although Ward’s resignation surprised and disappointed Liverpool, they remain confident that the football operation will continue to run smoothly under his direction through the end of the current campaign. The club has faith that the larger football operations team will ensure that there are no performance or delivery gaps during the transition. Liverpool has declared that they are open to investment amid rumors that the club might also be sold in its entirety.
“At Liverpool, everything is changing—a lot, too much, and in a way that makes you doubt everything,” Melissa Reddy said after reports that Sven Mislintat is interested in the Liverpool sporting director role. “In case losing former sporting director Michael Edwards wasn’t a big enough blow, Julian Ward, who served as Edwards’ assistant, has resigned and will leave Liverpool at the end of the current campaign. And all of this is happening as Mike Gordon, the FSG president who oversaw the club’s daily operations takes a step back.”
