Michael Olise scored a stoppage-time winner to help Crystal Palace produce one of the narrow football scores of the weekend in the Premier League. Despite playing poorly the entire half and having just five shots on goal, West Ham seized the lead when Said Benrahma hammered one home from 22 yards. Just before halftime, Wilfried Zaha tied the game for Palace after Thilo Kehrer made a mistake as they continued to play calm possession-based football. When Michail Antonio was hauled down inside the penalty area by a challenge from Marc Guehi, West Ham thought they had been granted an opportunity to win the game. Referee Paul Tierney changed his first judgment when VAR instructed him to see the video on the pitchside monitor.
Within the first 10 minutes, West Ham had four efforts on goal, but Benrahma’s thunderous effort into the top corner came after the Hammers went inside and around two challenges. On the 41st minute, Eze forced Kehrer to make a mistake on the touchline and then passed Zaha into the area to score. The leading scorer for Palace shimmed past Craig Dawson and fired a strike from 15 yards away.
At halftime, David Moyes substituted Antonio for the underwhelming Gianluca Scamacca, but the game’s basic formula remained unchanged: Palace controlled possession and shifted Eze and Zaha into perilous situations. But as West Ham got more involved in the game, it did not translate into any significant chances. Five West Ham attackers were waiting for the cross when Antonio surged into the box down the right during a hectic injury time, showcasing his speed and strength. However, his final ball was much below par, and Palace immediately launched an attack. When Olise cut in from the right and diverted his shot, it looped over a helpless Fabianski and completely threw the away end into a frenzy.
