Crysencio Summerville scored a late winner to help Leeds produce one of the narrow football scores of the weekend in the Premier League. Liverpool lost their second straight Premier League match when Summerville quickly answered Wilfried Gnonto’s left-wing cross, dropping them to the fourth position in the rankings after 12 games. Alisson and Joe Gomez made a defensive error that allowed Mohamed Salah to cancel out Rodrigo’s opening in the fourth minute, but Liverpool was unable to overcome the outstanding Illan Meslier, who made nine saves, which is the joint-most by any goalie in a Premier League game this season.
Before Summerville’s exciting winning goal in the first half, Brenden Aaronson hit the crossbar as Leeds fought in defence and continued to provide a threat on the counterattack. The most recent team to find weaknesses in Liverpool’s defence was Leeds. Leeds’ four-game losing streak ends with the victory, lifting some of Marsch’s burden and putting them out of harm’s way. Liverpool, who are currently in ninth place, has had a terrible start, falling 13 points behind Manchester City and 8 points behind Newcastle, who are currently in fourth place.
With a 3-0 victory against Ajax before to the match, Liverpool had already advanced to the round of 16 in the Champions League. However, their domestic flaws were quickly revealed at Anfield as they conceded the first goal for the eighth time in the Premier League this season.
The goal was created by substitute Gnonto, whose low cross from the left was first intercepted by Patrick Bamford before falling to Summerville, who held off a sluggish Virgil van Dijk before blasting across Alisson and into the corner. The goal lifted Leeds out of the relegation zone and increased the pressure on Klopp as Liverpool’s season appears to be heading for disaster. The goal caused wild celebrations among the travelling supporters and in the away dugout.
