Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored on his return from injury to help Everton produce one of the comprehensive football scores of the weekend in the Premier League. In front of Gareth Southgate, who was present, Calvert-Lewin, who still wants to make England’s World Cup roster, did nothing to hurt his chances by giving the hosts the lead after just 11 minutes with his first goal in five months. Gordon and McNeil put the finishing touches on an excellent performance that Lampard referred to as having everything as Everton never really looked back, dominating Patrick Vieira’s team.
Lampard may have started to feel the pressure again after straight losses to Manchester United, Tottenham, and Newcastle, but Everton got off to a strong start thanks to Calvert-Lewin. The attacker demonstrated just how important he is to Everton by diving back to take down Luka Milivojevic. After receiving the ball from the outstanding Alex Iwobi, he turned Marc Guehi on the edge of the box with a deft touch before beating Vicente Guaita with a low effort.
As Everton continued to dominate, Anthony Gordon was also giving Palace a lot of trouble. Everton was only inches from increasing their lead when Guaita deflected Gordon’s potent long-range shot over the crossbar. Michael Olise, who had been latching onto Jordan Ayew’s low pass for Palace, came close to tying the score in the second half, but Conor Coady made a superb last-ditch block to stop him.
The hosts eventually crushed Palace’s morale as they doubled their lead in the 63rd minute. Guaita only managed to save half of left-back Vitalii Mykolenko’s attempt, and Gordon quickly scored from close range. The goal was eventually awarded following a check by the video assistant referee after the initial flag for offside was raised. Five minutes from time, Everton’s victory was beautifully sealed when substitute O’Neil traded passes with Iwobi, whose backheel set up his teammate brilliantly to seal a convincing victory.
