Ivan Toney returned from injury to score from the penalty spot and help Brentford produce one of the most comfortable football scores of the weekend in the Premier League. After the returning attacker was hauled down by Marcos Senesi inside the area, Ivan Toney converted his 21st attempt from the spot to give the hosts the lead. After Josh Dasilva’s cross was met by Mathias Jensen, who had not scored since Brentford defeated Manchester United 4-0 in August, the game was easily won by Brentford, giving them 29 points after 19 games. The team led by Thomas Frank has gone seven games without a loss in the Premier League.
Brentford has now defeated Bournemouth in four of their last five league encounters, surpassing their previous 14 victories, while the Cherries have lost their last eight away league games. This most recent home victory was greatly indebted to a disputed first-half choice that, luckily, led to a goal after 38 tedious minutes. When Yoane Wissa hooked a long ball over for Toney to chase, there didn’t seem to be much of a threat, but Senesi panicked and the ensuing shirt pull gave referee Jarred Gillett the opportunity to award the penalty.
For the first time since October 24, Neto was back in the Bournemouth goal. He made the right decision, but Toney’s strike was too accurate. In front of the Bournemouth supporters, who had teased him about his FA allegations for alleged betting rule violations, the striker cupped his ears. Toney scored his 13th Premier League goal of the year, giving Brentford faint hopes of playing in Europe as long as he is available. At halftime, the only thing the home team had to show for their first-half efforts was Philip Billing’s strong drive that David Raya had stopped. O’Neil, however, had a far more enthusiastic appearance down the hallway.
