Ellis Sims scored a stoppage-time winner to help Sunderland produce one of the narrow football results of the weekend in the Championship. Three minutes after his terrible own goal gave Rovers the lead, Ross Stewart converted a penalty to tie the game. However, Simms came in for Patrick Roberts after 80 minutes and, with a calm finish from 12 yards out, scored the game’s dramatic victory. Due to Blackburn’s inability to close the eight-point gap between them and second-placed Sheffield United, Tony Mowbray’s team now moves up to the seventh place, one point outside of the play-off positions.
As a result of the chaos generated by Tyler Morton’s free-kick, Nathan Patterson was able to get past Stewart when his attempted headed clearance hit Dennis Cirkin before ricocheting back onto his own head. However, the Black Cats had rightfully leveled the score within three minutes. Stewart successfully drew a foul from John Buckley in the penalty area thanks to his experience, and he duly converted the ensuing penalty with the ideal amount of force and precision into the bottom left corner. As the game went on, neither team had any quality in the final third.
When it appeared that scoring may have been simpler, Stewart shot straight at Thomas Kaminski in the Blackburn goal, while Patterson made an exquisite save to deflect Morton’s deft attempt around the post. Simms received the ball with his back to the goal, controlled it with a single touch to the outside of his right boot, and then repeated the process to score the game-winning goal.
