Miguel Almiron continued his superb goalscoring form to help Newcastle produce one of the high-scoring football results of the weekend in the Premier League. Almiron’s clinical strike in the 35th minute gave Newcastle the lead—his eighth goal in as many Premier League games—before substitutes Chris Wood (58), Joe Willock (62), and Bruno Guimaraes (90+1) scored in the second half to give Eddie Howe’s team a comfortable victory on the south coast. With the win, the Magpies extend their winning streak to nine games and go ahead of Tottenham, who later on Sunday fell to Liverpool, into third place in the standings. Romain Perraud (89) gave Southampton a late consolation goal to make it 3-1, but the sixth loss in nine games put them in the relegation zone and increases pressure on manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles attempted to challenge Paraguayan international Almiron as he weaved his way into the area, but Almiron avoided the contact and sidefooted past Gavin Bazunu into the bottom-left corner to give Newcastle the lead 10 minutes before halftime at St. Mary’s. The weather quickly started to resemble the hosts’ afternoon as Willock extended to Newcastle’s lead with a low shot to the same area four minutes later after substitute Wood seized on a pass, turned, and sent the ball into the bottom corner under the growing downpour.
Pope had no chance as he calmly struck a shot into the top-right corner after Perraud prevented the visitors from keeping a clean sheet. Southampton’s joy, however, was short-lived as Guimaraes promptly retaliated by looping Newcastle’s fourth past a diving Bazunu. The high-flying Magpies are just five points behind champions Manchester City and seven points behind league leaders Arsenal. They have only lost once in the Premier League this year, a 2-1 loss at Liverpool on August 31. Southampton is currently ranked 18th in the table, one point and one position below local rival Bournemouth. Southampton has lost eight of its 14 league games this season.
