Bruno Guimaraes scored a brace to help Newcastle produce one of the high-scoring football results of the weekend in the Premier League. The Magpies entered the match undefeated at home since April, and Thomas Frank’s team never really threatened to end that streak. The only times Brentford came close to scoring were when Bryan Mbeumo’s early goal was overturned and Ivan Toney converted a penalty to make the score 2-1 and momentarily give the Londoners hope.
However, Newcastle immediately put an end to the visitors’ comeback with another goal from Brazil midfielder Guimaraes, who had already scored twice in the first half. Later, goals from Almiron and Ethan Pinnock put the finishing touches on a convincing win.
In order to break a streak of two games without scoring, let alone winning, Brentford traveled to Tyneside. However, they only had themselves to blame after making a sequence of errors that made a loss inevitable. When Mbeumo’s shot beat Nick Pope a little too easily, the Bees believed they had gotten off to a good start. However, the goal was rightfully disallowed for offside against Toney in the build-up.
After that early wake-up call, Newcastle swiftly took control of the match and didn’t waste much time scoring when Guimaraes headed in a goal from a fantastic first-time cross from Kieran Trippier (21). Raya may not have had a chance for Newcastle’s first goal, but after giving the ball directly to Callum Wilson, who selflessly squared for Murphy to score his first goal in more than a year, Raya was fully responsible for their second goal (28). Guimaraes immediately negated Toney’s goal against his previous team as he seized on an Aaron Hickey error to send a low effort into the bottom corner from the outside after Dan Burn’s foolish handball (54) gave Brentford hope.
