Leicester remained in the relegation zone as they produced one of the goalless football results of the weekend in the Premier League. Rodgers’ team was jeered off at the final whistle, and some supporters held up a banner pleading with the board to intervene, leaving Leicester with only one victory from their first 10 games. But in his post-game press conference, Rodgers defended the club’s owners and asserted that he alone should be held accountable for poor performance, not the hierarchy.
James Maddison, Patson Daka, Harvey Barnes, and Kieran Dewsbury-Hall all missed opportunities to give Rodgers’ Foxes the best chance to win, but there was no solace for their under-fire boss in a contest devoid of any attacking quality. Palace would only manage one shot on goal in their quest for their first away victory of the year, which would have sent Patrick Vieira’s squad into the top half. With five points, the point pushes Leicester up to position 19, but the Foxes will be disappointed. Palace’s new 10-point total moves them up to 13th place.
Leicester pounded the Palace goal early in the second half, but Guaita was on hand to stop Daka’s attempt. Maddison then flashed a shot over before dragging wide at the conclusion of a flowing attack just before the hour mark. Odsonne Edouard poked a shot through a crowd of players after 62 minutes had passed, forcing Danny Ward, the blind goalkeeper for Leicester, to make a fantastic save. This was Palace’s first and only chance on goal.
The tension increased as Palace appeared to be pushing for a late winner, but their lackluster performance was evident when the nondescript Wilfried Zaha withdrew after 78 minutes. Although Leicester was able to stop the Palace attack, it was unable to do so at the other end of the field. Timothy Castagne headed a late opportunity straight at Guaita, and James Maddison’s stoppage-time dive resulted in a booking and suspension rather than a penalty.
