Tottenham came back from two goals down to salvage a point as they produced one of the close football results of the weekend in the Premier League. In his first game since England’s missed penalty in the World Cup quarterfinal, Kane spearheaded the Spurs comeback from a 2-0 deficit by heading in from close range. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg then completed the turnaround as Antonio Conte’s team scored twice in six minutes. On the 15th minute, Vitaly Janelt gave the Bees the lead, making Spurs pay for yet another sluggish start. Toney, who was playing in his first game following his FA charge for 262 alleged betting violations, doubled the Bees’ lead soon after halftime. Just 90 minutes into its comeback, Premier League football reminded supporters of its drama and worth with a frenetic last 10 minutes that saw Kane hit the crossbar and Toney miss from six yards out.
While Kane had the game’s opening shot when his free kick struck the wall, Brentford eventually made their pressure count after 15 minutes by pushing Forster and company into errant deliveries. Bryan Mbeumo received a pass from Toney down the left side, and Mathias Jensen volleyed in response to his cross. Forster was forced to pass the attempt to the advancing, unmarked Janelt because Clement Lenglet deflected it, and Janelt could not miss. Heung-Min Son and Dejan Kulusevski tested David Raya’s hands three times each, but they were routine saves for the Brentford goalie as Tottenham suddenly woke up after being pushed back.
At the other end, Zanka recovered a lost ball after a risky Brentford throw-in, but Forster made a strong save of his close-range attempt. When Toney broke through after Yves Bissouma lost possession in the centre circle and around Forster to tap the ball in, Brentford thought they had scored a second goal. However, the Bees striker was correctly called offside. After the break, Tottenham came out considerably more upbeat, but the game turned against them during a contentious 60 seconds.
When Kane received a cross from Son in the Brentford penalty area, he fell to the ground while Mee grabbed hold of him tightly. Before Brentford proceeded up the other end and extended their lead, Spurs’ objections were dismissed by both referee David Coote and VAR. Eric Dier unnecessarily gave up a corner with a careless clearance while under pressure, and Christian Norgaard flicked the ball on, where Toney was waiting to score at the near post. Spurs quickly cut the lead in half thanks to Lenglet’s excellent deep cross, which Kane redirected past a diving David Raya into the other corner to keep his Boxing Day scoring streak perfect.
Six minutes later, Hojbjerg scored from the edge of the box to bring Conte’s team back to level, capping off yet another Tottenham comeback football results. What transpired next was a chaotic situation in which opportunities were lost and pleas for penalties were ignored. Matt Doherty’s collapse in the box in response to Zanka’s challenge was initially disallowed, and Mbeumo was then cautioned for a dive while attempting to get through Forster. When Rico Henry’s cross reached the same Brentford forward from 12 yards away, the player missed with a shot, and Kane’s bicycle kick in the other box’s six-yard area was unsuccessful.
Kane hit the cross from Ivan Perisic before Raya before Tottenham substitute Davinson Sanchez missed a 30-yard volley at Raya. Moments later, Toney had another opportunity to score when Mads Roerslev headed in a deep cross to the forward who was just six yards away. Before Forster, the Brentford player reached the ball but was only able to poke it over. While Son’s low shot in stoppage time tested Raya, who was able to stop it thanks to Brentford’s goalkeeper, the final siren ensured that it was too late for either team to score.
