Arsenal came from behind to leapfrog them into second place as they produced one of the narrow football results of the weekend in the Women’s Super League. After 16 games, Arsenal moved into second place with 38 points, one point ahead of City and three points behind leaders Manchester United, who defeated Brighton & Hove Albion 4-0 on Saturday. Khadija Shaw gave City the lead in the fifth minute, finishing off a fluid passing move with a wonderful header into the net from Chloe Kelly’s cross.
Lauren Hemp missed a penalty that would have put City up 2-0 at halftime, and it proved costly as Arsenal staged a second-half rally, with Norway midfielder Frida Maanum blasting the ball home after a goalmouth melee to draw in the 62nd minute. Katie McCabe scored 13 minutes later after picking up a short corner and cutting inside before unleashing a powerful shot into the net. Chelsea, who have two games in hand on Manchester United and one on Arsenal, can move into second place with a win over Aston Villa later on Sunday.
“Arsenal has scored a tremendous victory. They still have a game in hand, as well as games against Chelsea and Manchester United. They are now solidly in the title chase. It’s all set for a delicious finale to the season now,” former Arsenal Women striker Ellen White said. “Man City will be quite disappointed with this result. The winning streak has certainly ended, but they are still in the thick of it at the top of the table. They will have to return to training, work hard, and try to begin another winning streak. Arsenal is now on a roll. As Arsenal’s players appeared fatigued in the first half, Man City needed to capitalize. They must score another goal to end the game. Arsenal stormed back in the second half and absolutely changed the game.”
The big games keep coming for Arsenal, who travel to league leaders Manchester United next Saturday at noon (kick-off 12.30 p.m.). Meanwhile, Manchester City will play West Ham on Sunday.
