After being substituted during Chelsea’s final Premier League match against Aston Villa, Edouard Mendy has given Chelsea an injury scare ahead of the Champions League Final. Mendy has sustained a rib injury against Aston Villa on Sunday. He could miss Chelsea’s Champions League final against Manchester City.
Despite losing 2-1 at Villa Park, Thomas Tuchel’s side finished fourth in the Premier League after Leicester City lost 4-2 at home to Tottenham.
Mendy, on the other hand, was forced off at halftime after colliding with the post and was replaced by Kepa Arrizabalaga for the second 45 minutes. Tuchel is concerned that Mendy will be ruled out of Chelsea’s Champions League final on Saturday.
As Thomas Tuchel prepares for Saturday’s match against Manchester City in Porto, he will have a scan on Monday. The scan will be to ascertain the degree of the issue. At the end of the first half, Mendy collided with the post while diving to save Bertrand Traore’s goal. He was substituted by Kepa Arrizabalaga at halftime.
With less than a week before the Champions League Final, the fact that Mendy was unable to continue at Villa Park is a huge injury problem for Thomas Tuchel.
Tuchel On Edouard Mendy Injury
In his post-match press conference, Tuchel spoke about Mendy’s injury. He said, “He slipped on the frame from the goal net when he landed and injured his ribs. We’re concerned. We don’t know if it’s a minor influence or anything more significant. We’ll have to wait for the results of the scans. He has big pain in his ribs. We’ll wait until we get home before taking any photos. We’ll get an insight into what’s going on tomorrow. We have one week to plan, and we’ll see what we can do. We need to press to do whatever we can to get him in goal on Saturday if at all possible.”
Since joining Chelsea from Rennes last summer, Mendy has had an outstanding season. He played a vital role in the club’s run to the Champions League Final.
