For the second time in history, the Bayern players are the champions of the UEFA Super Cup, beating Seville in the final in Budapest after a 2-1 (1-1) overtime.
For Bayern, Leon Goretzka (34) and Javi Martinez (104) scored, and for Seville, Lucas Ocampos (13pen).
The 45th edition of the UEFA Super Cup was played by Bayern and Seville at the Puskas Arena in Budapest, and UEFA permitted the participation of spectators for the first time since the start of the pandemic, thus fulfilling a third of the stadium’s capacity.
Seville, champion of the European Championship, proved to be a very tough nut to crack for Bayern, who came to Budapest on the wings of an impressive Bundesliga 8-0 victory over Schalke.
The match began shockingly for the European champion, Alaba knocked Ivan Rakitic down with his hands in the penalty area in the 12th minute, and Argentina’s Lucas Ocampos scored from the penalty spot for Seville’s lead
Then Mueller and Lewandowski had a great chance to equalize, which came in the 34th minute because of Bayern’s much better game. With his back to the target, Pavarda Lewandowski left the ball, leaving the ball for Leon Goretzka, who hit the net from ten meters.
De Jong missed the opportunity in the 48th minute, and three minutes later, because of the backcourt, Lewandowski’s goal was canceled. Throughout the second half, Bayern struck and was a stronger side, and another goal was annulled due to a Lewandowski foul.
The Bavarians came to victory in the 104th minute with a goal by the “joker from the bench” Javi Martinez, who scored 2-1 with his head after a shot by Alaba and the protection of goalkeeper Buono.
So far, neither the Bavarian nor the Andalusian clubs have been very popular in this competition, both celebrating only once so far, Bayern in 2013 with three previous losses and Seville in 2006 after beating them in the next five finals.
Tonight’s victory gave five million euros to Bayern and 3.8 million euros to Sevilla.
