Olympique de Marseille beat Clermont Foot thanks to a fabulous strike from Cengiz Under. With a 1-0 football score ‘Les Olympiens’ won away from home for the first time in five games. The first opportunity fell to the visitors in terrible conditions at the Stade Gabriel-Montpied when Matteo Guendouzi feinted to shoot from inside the area before sliding a pass inside to Bamba Dieng – which took out four Clermont defenders – however the striker’s effort was denied by Arthur Desmas.
After 25 minutes in the game, the deadlock was broken when Dieng won the ball back in midfield, allowing Guendouzi to play Under in, and the Turkish winger produced an excellent curling effort to beat the despairing Desmas at the far post to make it 1-0. Clermont’s Saif-Eddine Khaoui could have restored the parity but his side-footed effort didn’t have the required power.
Sampaoli introduced big hitters Dimitri Payet and Arkadiusz Milik in response to his side’s sluggish restart. With just over 15 minutes remaining on the clock Payet and Milik combined to nearly double Marseille’s lead when the latter headed the former’s cross from the left onto the crossbar.
‘The Olympians’ are now placed third in the Ligue 1 standings, 9 points behind the leading Paris Saint-Germain. Check out football highlights of the Ligue 1 game in which Marseille beat Clermont away from home.
