The forward has been the subject of great interest from his home country since his move to Espanyol in January 2019. Users were asked to choose between Wu Lei and Lionel Messi and the Chinese player is ahead in a survey conducted by LaLiga on the Chinese social network website Weibo.
More data shows that Wu Lei’s first goal for Espanyol generated 14 times the amount of reactions than Messi ‘s goals in China. It remains to be seen whether Wu Lei can have much of an impact on Espanyol in the remainder of the LaLiga Santander season. He has been one of the Espanyol players to test positive for coronavirus in the last few months.
Stakeholders have proclaimed for a year and a half that Wu Lei is just as popular in China as Lionel Messi, winner of six Golden Balls. And, besides amply demonstrating in Espanyol ‘s accounts that his player has an unquestionable pull in your country, there are signs that the statement was true.
On Friday, May 29, he published a survey of LaLiga in his official Weibo social network account, the Chinese Twitter, so that Internet users would settle their support between a hypothetical Barcelona derby: Messi’s Barcelona or Wu Lei’s Espanyol? And even though the votes were slightly towards the ‘Flea’ in the first hours, which led him to pass the phase, the results are even – the survey concludes this Friday – that late Thursday, without going any further, the Espanyol player won with more than half of the 3,997 votes.
To get an idea of Wu Lei ‘s pull in China, where he’s been proclaimed best footballer over the past two years, just compare another LaLiga poll this past week, in which he gave himself a choice between Messi and Madrid’s Atlético player Diego Costa. With 8,400 of 11,100 votes, the Barcelona striker has won.
