Wayne Rooney has revealed that he has advised Manchester United a month after rejoining Everton to sign Idrissa Gueye.
Until moving to United in 2004, Rooney started his career at Everton and went on to win 16 major trophies at Old Trafford including five Premier League titles and the Champions League.
The former England International made its way back to Goodison Park in the summer of 2017 on a free transfer, having been considered by the Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho surplus to requirements.
Rooney stayed with DC United for one full season before embarking on a new challenge in MLS, helping Everton earn a top-flight eighth-place finish.
Paris Saint-Germain star Gueye, who enjoyed an impressive spell on Merseyside between 2016 and 2019, was one man who stood out above all others at United’s record scorer during his second stint with the Toffees.
Rooney says he soon became persuaded that the Senegal international had enough talent to join United, who have been linked with the midfielder on many occasions, but he struggled to persuade his former club to make an offer for his services.
The Red Devils legend wrote in his latest column for The Times: “Everyone talks about his tackling and energy but what surprised me was his quality on the ball he always looked to play it forward and to your feet. After a month playing with him, I spoke to people at Manchester United saying he was good enough for them. I wasn’t shocked when Paris Saint-Germain signed him.”
Rooney has time spent playing alongside Marouane Fellaini. He discussed the ex-Everton star, who left Goodison in 2013 to join United.
The Belgian international was often criticized for not fitting the style of play of the Red Devils, and never quite succeeded in winning over its detractors despite placing some impressive performances in the middle of the park.
