Guardiola has been searching for a number two since Mikel Arteta left Arsenal last December, and his former skipper is said to have been his favorite choice. The iconic former skipper of the club had been given the chance to return to the Etihad only one year after leaving. The Sun reports that Kompany dismissed the suggestion, but insists that he is committed to maintaining his current contract as player-manager at the boyhood club in Anderlecht.
Since Mikel Arteta left to take over Arsenal in December, Pep Guardiola had been looking for a new No2. And informal talks are assumed to have been held to see whether Kompany would be interested in the vacancy.
Having won 10 trophies during his 11-year stay at the club, he enjoys legendary status among the City faithful. He confirmed to Anderlecht this week however that he is committed to the role until his contract expires in 2022 and beyond. He’s even plowed some of his capital into his boyhood club as part of a sale that has just passed.
One big reason is that after having so much of his career blighted by injury, Kompany wants to keep on playing – and worries he may not get the opportunity at the Etihad.
The 34-year-old still believes he could play in just over two years for his country at the next World Cup.
His first year as team manager was mixed as they finished eighth in the table due to Coronavirus which ended early.
Guardiola is also believed to be keen to bring in a new assistant with former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso linked to the job ahead of next season.
