A transfer option for Tottenham, defender Thomas Meunier from Paris Saint-Germain, is expected to join Thiago Silva and Edinson Cavani in leaving the club this summer when his contract expires. PSG sporting director Leonardo has revealed over the weekend that Silva and Cavani, who joined the club in 2012 and 2013 respectively, will leave Parc des Princes.
The Brazilian then added that Meunier, Layvin Kurzawa, and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting are likely to follow suit, saying this is ‘indeed the idea’ of letting their contracts run out.
It was in an interview with Le Journal du Dimanche, a French newspaper, where Leonardo announced the departures of Silva and Cavani and talked about possible exits for the three others. He is confident, though, that coach Thomas Tuchel will remain at the club, amid doubts about the German’s long term future.
The expected exit of Meunier will open Tottenham ‘s door for the 28-year-old to sign on ahead of 2020/21. In April, 90min announced that is looking for a new right-back, Spurs eyes Meunier and that he was a preferred prospect for Manager Jose Mourinho.
Spurs must make a ‘huge move’ to sign Meunier, and his relationship with international colleague Toby Alderweireld, who pledged his future to the club in December, is hoped to help persuade the player to choose them.
Manchester United also kept an eye on Meunier intending to boost right-back depth and increase competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka. Following his appearance at Club Brugge, Meunier joined PSG in 2016 and at the European Championship, that same summer played a leading role for Belgium.
Over the four years since he appeared in all competitions for PSG 128 times, although he was not always a regular due to injury.
The 2019/20 French season is already over as it has been suspended during the coronavirus crisis, but Leonardo expressed hope that the current squad will remain together until after the end of the Champions League, which will not resume until August. That would involve a range of temporary contract extensions that could complicate things up.
