The Paris Saint-Germain defender Thiago Silva will leave the club once his new contract expires on 30 June, according to a phone call with sporting director Leonardo. The captain made the switch to Paris in the summer of 2012 and has since made 310 appearances for the club.
During his time with Les Parisiens, he helped his side to seven Ligue 1 trophies while also winning the Coupe de France four times, and five times the Coupe de la Ligue.
However, L’Equipe now suggests that the 35-year-old will leave the club once his new contract expires, bringing his eight-year stay in Paris to an end. The club’s sporting director, Leonardo, recently called the central defender to inform him that the club will not extend its existing contract, which is due to expire on June 30.
Although he is now in the final stages of his career, Silva has ambitions to play at the next World Cup and is ‘expecting’ a new two-year deal coming in. Both he and his family enjoy life in Paris, but the club wanted to break their captain ‘s ties. Thiago Silva’s loss will be felt next season, considered one of PSG ‘s history ‘s best-if, not best-defenders.
However, with the Brazilian now leaving and Teammate Edinson Cavani’s future still in the air, L’Equipe reports that the Ligue 1 outfit is attempting to set the stage for a ‘new wave.’
Silva could also prove to be a shrewd acquisition for any club, taking into account on and off the field its immense experience and leadership qualities. The Brazilian was linked to a move back to Milan, although the Premier League showed interest, too.
However, L’Equipe also says a return to Fluminense is an option, with the club’s new arrival Fred recently contacted Thiago Silva to encourage him to make the move too.
While the defender’s stay in Paris will finally come to an end, what remains unclear at this time is if he will return to PSG training on 22 June with the rest of his teammates provided that his deal would expire just eight days later.
