The president of the Spanish Segunda Division side Las Palmas claims that their June 13 match against Girona may be the first fans attended in Europe since the coronavirus pandemic struck.
Miguel Angel Ramirez believes the minimum risk of infection on the Canary Islands for Covid-19 will make it safe for fans to watch the game at Estadio Gran Canaria.
Ramirez believes such easing would allow fans to attend the first match of the resumed 2019-20 Segunda Division season at Las Palmas in social distance steps.
“Fans from Las Palmas will be able to attend the stadium to cheer on their team against Girona as of June 13,” he told the official radio station of the club. The Canary Islands are a safe destination. Gran Canaria is a safe destination, so we can become the first stadium in the major leagues to play with fans in the stands again.”
Spain was one of the worst-hit countries in Europe by the pandemic, but tight quarantine controls and phased removal of those restrictions across autonomous regions has helped to keep infection and death rates under control in recent weeks.
La Liga is set to resume with the derby match between Sevilla and Real Betis on June 13, but for the near future, all games in the top flight are likely to be behind closed doors.
