The virus does not discriminate and, despite being incredibly fit athletes, footballers are just as likely as anybody else to get the coronavirus. Coronavirus Covid-19 has been waging worldwide havoc and, sadly, football has not spared the effects of the outbreak. The virus works through society and several high profile footballers. Not only health but COVID-19 has also affected the rates of the footballers.
The Portuguese giants unloaded the midfielder in a contract in January, but ask rates have since dropped due to the Covid-19 crisis.
Sporting Lisbon president Frederico Varandas claimed that after his move to Manchester United, Bruno Fernandes’ worth could have plummeted to £18m. When he joined the Red Devils in a £57 m January deal, Fernandes ended a pleasing transfer saga, and the player enjoyed a promising start to life at the club with three goals and four assists in nine outings in all competitions.
However, the coronavirus pandemic has seen player prices smash, and Varandas claims that Sporting will only get around €20 m (£17.7 m) for Fernandes if it is sold now. “The crisis triggered by Covid-19 is detrimental to the European football industry in general, but Portugal is the most affected of all countries, as 50 percent of the revenue comes from player sales,” Varandas told RTP.
“Bruno Fernandes, for instance? He was sold for €65 million in January. What will he be worth today? Maybe €20 million? €30 million? No one knows.”Fernandes won the Premier League Player of the Month Award in February and still has to taste defeat in the United Shirt.”
While Sporting is pleased to have the best possible price for Fernandes, they are currently locked in a fight with Serie A side Sampdoria over a supposed sell-on clause of 10 percent.
