Italy’s top three divisions are awarded on August 20 until the end of the season, but Serie C President Francesco Ghirelli says ‘we’re in no shape to compete’
Although Series A and B welcomed today’s FIGC announcement, there has been a slightly different reaction in the third tier, where clubs have already voted here to end the 2019-20 season.
“What happened today in the Federation meeting was far from acceptable, I have to be honest here. Series C has a special place in professional football, which is why there are divisions Series A, B, and C. We are in no condition to play, 60 club medics have told us that, so why should we be dishonest and say otherwise? There is a need to change football at its very roots and in its society. They can not guarantee health and safety policies and the current protocol also goes beyond the capabilities of most Series C clubs. I’m going to discuss it again with the Presidents. We have voted on this so we should think about it again. My only aim is to protect the clubs and players’ interests, as safety is paramount.,” Ghirelli wrote on the Lega Pro website.
There is the possibility of freezing the division as it is, promoting the top three group winners, and determining play-offs on the fourth.
