Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman is recovering from a heart attack in the hospital. The former manager of Southampton and Everton became ill Sunday afternoon at his home in Bussum.
The Dutch National Team Manager was taken to Amsterdam hospital after he complains about the chest pain. After scans revealed the blockage, the former Everton and Southampton manager had a stent put into his coronary vein.
Koeman’s wife Bertina and his manager, Rob Jansen, verified that the 57-year-old is in a safe condition to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.
The legend of Ajax, PSV and Barcelona had to have a stent implanted after a cardiac catheterization shows the vein was blocked (a tube that holds the blood flow open).
Before complaining of chest pain he had been out riding. He was then taken to Amsterdam UMC hospital in an ambulance. He is expected to be back home on Monday and no indication has been made so far that his heart condition was linked to coronavirus.
Koeman, who won eight league titles, two European Cups, and Euro 88 as a player, prepared his Netherlands side this summer for Euro 2020 before the Covid-19 crisis forced the tournament to be postponed for a year.
Since then, all international matches have been canceled, with league across Europe waiting to see their current campaigns completed.
Koeman had a very successful career in Catalonia, having won four La Liga titles in 1992 and the European Cup.
The 57-year-old has been linked to the future with a return as a manager to the club. KNVB has stated having a clause in its contract that will enable him to move to Barcelona.
Koeman has said he is committed to sticking with La Oranje until after the 2022 World Cup, considering his interest in the transfer.
