Dani Olmo clarified his decision to join Dinamo Zagreb’s RB Leipzig, conceding a potential move to Barcelona in January has never been a “true choice” for him.
Olmo made a €20 million (£18m/$22 m) move to Leipzig in the winter transfer window, following months of speculation about his future.
The 22-year-old had spent the previous five years of his career with Dinamo in Croatia, but he became one of the hottest assets in European football after his impressive performances during last summer’s U21 European Championships in Spain.
Several top clubs were linked to last year’s winger signature, including Barca, and he announced back in March that he had also received offers from the Premier League and Series A before moving to Germany.
The most possible destination for Olmo was Camp Nou as he rose through the ranks of La Masia before joining Dinamo, but the winger maintains that a return to Catalonia was never really on the Olma’s move to Barca
Why did Olma move to Barca?
When asked why a move to Barca never came to fruition, international Spain said to Goal: “Maybe this isn’t a problem for me. It didn’t happen and I’m not sure if it was a real choice. A lot of things have been published in the press but in Croatia I was happy.”
Nevertheless, Olmo continued to confess that one day the chance to play in La Liga still has great appeal to him because he admires the division’s extremely “competitive” nature.
“I said it in the past. Playing in the championship at your home country will be amazing,” he said. “La Liga is one of the biggest, really competitive competitions in the world. So why not? Sure, one day I want to be back in La Liga” he added.
Olmo continued about what drew him to Leipzig: “For the project and how they take care of the talent, I chose Leipzig. When you look over the roster, you will confirm that we are a very young squad, with fantastic projection players but still ready to fight for the highest objectives.”
