According to Spanish sources, Manchester United is close to signing Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez.
The 25-year-old is considered to be one of the best central midfielders in the world but his release clause of €150 million (£131 m) has rendered him untouchable in the transfer market until now.
That’s down from the £131 m Atletico was originally seeking to improve the scenery of the next transfer window before the coronavirus pandemic.
Nonetheless, over the last two months there have been several stories linking the Spaniard with a transfer to Old Trafford and this new one from Todofichajes.com suggests that a fee has been negotiated and that a contract is being concluded over motion.
Yet, if Paul Pogba leaves United, the contract can just go through. The club is aware that there are plenty of options for Pogba to leave in the summer and set their eyes are on Saul Niguez to fill the outlet claims in his place.
Saúl is close to becoming a Manchester United player according to the details at TodoFichajes. The Spanish international has a termination option of €150 million but the economic conditions facing the football environment will limit his freedom to €80 million [£70 million].
The talks are effectively closed, and after the current season, the agreement will become official.
This is due to the complex nature of Saul ‘s deal, signed before deal ownership by third party players was outlawed.
The truth is that Atletico can ill afford to refuse such a bid. They are financially struggling and are in danger of failing to qualify for the Champions League next season, as they are lying in the fifth position in La Liga.
Nevertheless, the move relies on Pogba winning a transfer away from Old Trafford, as United needs to raise funds from player sales internally.
The only realistic sides to sign Pogba this summer are Real Madrid and Juventus.
