Manchester United did not agree to an extension of the loan for striker Odion Ighalo. The deal with his parent club Shanghai Shenhua formally expired Sunday night. And SunSport reports that an arrangement has not yet been reached to prolong his tenure at Old Trafford.
United had doubts about the cost of keeping the 30-year-old striker beyond the present terms.
Way back in January, Ighalo traded the Chinese Super League for the Premier League in a surprise day loan deal.
Since returning to English football, the former Watford man had scored four goals in eight games. The Nigerian made a personal plea to Shanghai Shenhua to let him finish the Old Trafford season before returning to China. United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made it clear that he wants Ighalo to hang around until the end of the delayed season but it now seems as though it is not going to happen.
Ighalo looked confident on Friday when he arrived at Carrington training when he attempts to get back to fitness after lockdown.
It is confirmed that Manchester United has failed to extend the loan term to Odion Ighalo for Shanghai Shenhua. With the Nigerian scoring four goals from eight appearances since his arrival in January, United was keen to retain its services until the campaign was over. Over the weekend it was announced that the Premier League giants were likely to retain the 30-year-old for the remainder of 2020, provided the player signed a new contract with his parent club.
However, the Sun says that the respective teams didn’t finalize a fresh deal, leaving Ighalo to return to China.
The former Watford man, who grew up as a United supporter, has previously admitted that he wanted to spend as much time at Old Trafford as possible.
