Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris says it would be “cruel” for Liverpool to be denied the Premier League title due to the coronavirus pandemic, adding that players and clubs want to end the 2019-20 season. Liverpool was just two wins away from their first championship in 30 years, when the Premier League shut down in March, like all major leagues across Europe, because of the Covid-19 outbreak.
In reaction to the pandemic, France’s Ligue 1 and the Netherlands’ Eredivisie have already declared their seasons over, but the Premier League, Spain’s La Liga, and Italy’s Series A remain eager to restart when it is secure.
The probability of resumption was debated by clubs in June, though games would almost certainly be behind closed doors and likely at neutral venues in an attempt to meet government restrictions on large gatherings.
But that expectation relies on regulatory approval and compliance with strict safety standards, which ensures that, the risk of having to end the season in any other way remains constant.
Lloris hopes it doesn’t come for that, particularly for Liverpool, who are at the top of the table 25 points away from nearest Manchester City rivals.
“We are in a situation where everyone needs to finish and get the field verdict,” told L’Equipe the France international.
“It would be awful if a thing finishes like nine days before the end of the Premier League. With the lead they have, it would be unfair for Liverpool too. We are all like winners. As for anyone, the taste of unfinished business will be there. Additionally we enter the most exciting time, the most beautiful moment of the seasons. No one wants to see it end like this.”
