Lionel Messi wrote another chapter in the record books as he set up Antoine Griezmann for Barcelona’s third goal against Villarreal for his 19th-season assist in La Liga — the highest Argentina ever tally in the Spanish top-flight, reports Goal.
The 33-year-old had already set up Luis Suarez halfway in the first half at El Madrigal, becoming the first man to hit 18 assists for the season since Messi did so himself in 2014-15 and earlier in 2010-11.
He went one better shortly before the break, his tidy back-heel teeing up Griezmann who caressed La Liga ‘s ninth goal of his campaign at home. Messi, more than any other team-mate, has now set three of the nine goals.
It was a great reminder of the continuing value of Messi to Barca after his years of hierarchical progression in Barcelona.
