Although the DFL has set dates for the return of the Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga, the DFB is still trying to figure out when it’s time for the return of Germany’s other sporting competitions. On July 4, Kicker says they are targeting a final in Berlin.
The German Football Cup finals will be played without spectators on July 4 in Berlin, reported the German Football Association (DFB). Also, the dates of the semi-final matches, to be held on June 9 and 10, were postponed.
The two semifinals will, however, be played first. Originally scheduled for April 21-22, Tuesday June 9, and Wednesday June 10 are supposed to be the dates for those two matches. Bayern Munich will host Eintracht Frankfurt and host Bayer Leverkusen at FC Saarbrücken. If such games are to be held in the evening or late afternoon, as demanded by police unions, has not yet been decided.
In the semi-finals, defending champion Bayern and 2018 winner Eintracht will clash while in the second round, Bayer Leverkusen and quarter-finalist Saarbrucken will play. The final was originally scheduled for May 23 but was postponed due to a coronavirus pandemic to beginning July.
“This version is the greatest. Next season we all hope to see great matches again in full arenas and in amateur club stadiums that make this competition so special,” DFB President Fritz Keller said.
On May 16, the German Bundesliga begins, with all matches being played without spectators.
Still, at this stage, there are more questions than answers. Saarbrücken is currently leading; however, it is not clear at this time whether or not the Regionalliga will even return to the season finish.
Although the DFB has suggested that they will cover COVID-19 testing for Saarbrücken before they return to normal training, how much of a competitive disadvantage do they face by not playing a match for nearly three months and a half before such a major game?
