Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool’s boss, told fans that this summer the club isn’t going to spend high, and instead looks to encourage more talent.
The Reds have spent heavily on the likes of Alisson and Virgil van Dijk in recent years helping guide them to the Premier League and Champions League glory, but the financial effect of the coronavirus outbreak is likely to dissuade other teams from spending heavily this summer.
Klopp has previously admitted that he wouldn’t be able to justify throwing money around this summer, but he has now insisted (via Sky Sports News) that his squad doesn’t need that kind of investment anyway.
Klopp said: “COVID has, of course, affected both sides with ins and outs, that’s very usual, so it’s just not possible it’s going to be the busiest summer in the world. But maybe at a later point in the year, we’ll learn more if the transfer window is still open. So this team…look at it. It’s not a team that you need to change now and say ‘Well, we need this position and this position.’ They don’t have a first XI, I’m saying we’ve got a first 16 or 17, they can all play at the same stage. We can’t invest millions and millions because we want to or think it’s good to do it. We never expected this to happen.
Klopp added that instead of making new signatures, he would like to focus on bringing even more youngsters into Anfield.
“We want to reinforce this squad and that squad is strong. How can you boost a strong squad in the transfer market is the challenge with a strong squad?” he said.
“That is possible, it works with money, but it never works only with money. You have to be imaginative, and we’re trying to be innovative. We ‘re trying to find ideas internally and there’s still a lot to come: we’ve got three or four people who can take big things,” he added.
The likes of midfielder Curtis Jones, right-back Neco Williams, and winger Harvey Elliott are all close to breaking into Klopp’s senior side, and it appears they ‘re all going to be given the chance to push themselves further next year.
