After suffering a severe knee injury in training this week, Jeremy Mathieu retired from football, back in the former Barcelona and Valencia center.
The ex-French international is out of contract with the current side Sporting Lisbon at the end of June, but the Portuguese club has decided to cancel their agreement with each other according to Mundo Deportivo sources.
The 36-year-old made 582 senior appearances in a 16-year career following his entrance through the youth ranks at French club Sochaux, before joining Toulouse in 2005.
He went on to Valencia in 2009, making 126 appearances for Los Che in La Liga, before going back to Camp Nou in 2014.
In both their 2015 and 2016 La Liga title wins Mathieu was a regular for La Blaugrana. Until leaving Sporting Lisbon on a free transfer in 2017.
Though he turned 33 before moving to Portugal, he also kept a regular spot in their side, winning two Portuguese Cups in 2017 and 2018.
