Getafe kicked off their quest to finish in the top four in La Liga and qualify for the Champions League by beating Real Sociedad 2-1 at home Monday, thanks to two goals from striker Jaime Mata to secure their first win since March.
In the first half, they had a big slice of luck, as Hugo Duro won a questionable penalty. It seemed that he had trod on Robin Le Normand, a defender of the Real Community, but the foul was awarded in his favor and Jaime Mata scored from the mark.
Mata opened the scoring in the 20th minute from the penalty spot and regained their lead in the 83rd after Adnan Januzaj had leveled for Sociedad in the second half, who is also vying to qualify for Europe’s elite competition.
Adnan Januzaj played for 56 minutes, but Mata caught his second with seven minutes remaining, catching Aritz Elustondo napping and beating Alex Remiro in his close post.
The win put Getafe on 52 points into the fifth position in the standings, two behind Sevilla, who finished fourth in the final qualification spot of the Champions League.
Real Sociedad has now lost its last four games and must now scrap to make sure they at least make places for the Europa League. Elsewhere, Sociedad sunk to a fourth consecutive loss and was left seventh at the table on 47.
