Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery has confirmed he will be open to a potential return to the Premier League.
Following a poor season, Emery was relieved of his duties at the Emirates in November, resulting in a shock-defeat in the Europa League by Eintracht Frankfurt. He was returned to the English top-flight with Everton with an imminent return, interviewed for the role at Goodison before Carlo Ancelotti took the reins.
Emery maintains that he will be able to take another shot at the Premier League given his difficulties in north London, but acknowledges that his most likely route back into the dugout is in Spain.
The Spaniard replaced Arsene Wenger in the Emirates dugout in 2018, but after a bad run of form it lasted less than two years before being sacked in November.
Before Carlo Ancelotti arrived at Merseyside, the 48-year-old had been linked to a move to Everton, but Emery had acknowledged he would be more likely to manage in his native Spain than in the Premier League.
“I’m open to coaching,” he said to Eurosport’s ‘Confinados’ program. “In Spain, in England, in Italy, in France, elsewhere… but if you ask me where I think I’m going to be, I think I’m going to be closer to the Spanish League.”
Adding to the above conversation, he also mentioned that “After four years if I have a good chance to return to Spain and I feel like it, I want to face it.
“The first goal is to return next season, but if I can’t find something that matches in with what I’m looking for or touches my heart, I’ll wait.” Everton was interested in me and I was talking about it. I didn’t say no, we also had a three-hour interview.
Emery has won 43 of his 78 games as Arsenal’s manager, leading the Gunners to last season’s Europa League final.
