According to Tomasz Kuszczak, who said Manchester United number one was like “Spider-Man” in training at the start of his Premier League career, David de Gea is “an incredible goalkeeper”
In the summer of 2011, De Gea completed a £19 million ($24 m) move from Atletico Madrid to Old Trafford, succeeding Edwin van der Sar as the first choice keeper for United.
During an error-filled debut season, the Spaniard saw his performances called into question but defied his critics to play a key role in the Red Devils 2012-13 title triumph, before stepping up his game to new levels in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.
As United slipped into the Premier League behind the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea, and Liverpool, De Gea was forced to take center stage to limit the damage. The 29-year-old has on numerous occasions been named the club’s player of the year and has established himself as the best shot-stopper in European football.
However, De Gea ‘s standards started to slip towards the end of last season, with United losing valuable points due to his lapses in concentration between the sticks. The same problems resurfaced frequently in 2019-20, but Kuszczak is adamant that one of the masters of his trade remains a former team-mate.
The former United backup keeper said to MUTV: “I’ve been working with him for nearly a year and I remember seeing someone smash a ball to the top corner and from nowhere he’d fly across it and save it like Spider-Man! I was like ‘wow what a guy.’ He’s strong and quick, and a top guy. You’re going to make mistakes, we’re all making mistakes, but he’s been proving himself for years.
