Manchester City is hopeful that David Silva will consent to an extension of a short-term deal to allow the midfielder to see the remainder of the season, sources told ESPN.
On June 30 Silva was set to leave the Etihad Stadium and had discussions on a deal with the former club Valencia.
Nonetheless, with games scheduled to start through the summer to make up for time lost due to the coronavirus pandemic, City has worked to secure the 34-year-old before the campaign ends.
An official agreement will not be placed in place until there is an official plan to complete the season, but sources have told ESPN that Silva is willing to stay, particularly given that he still has the chance to win the Champions League — the one big trophy missing from his collection.
FIFA has given guidelines that contracts are to be extended before the season can be concluded due to end on June 30 so both the club and the player must consent before they can ratify it.
The city has 10 remaining Premier League games, plus outstanding FA Cup and Champions League fixtures. The team of Pep Guardiola is 2-1 ahead in their round-of-16 Champions League tie against Real Madrid with the second leg yet to be played at the Etihad.
During 10 years at the club, Silva has won 11 big honors, including four Premier League titles. Since moving from Valencia in 2010 he has made more than 400 appearances for City.
