David Moyes has warned West Ham that the job is far from full after giving their survival bid a big boost with a 3-2 win over Chelsea. The Hammers are now three points clear from the drop zone, thanks to Andriy Yarmolenko ‘s dramatic last-gasp winner at the London Stadium, after their first victory since the restart.
West Ham leaves for Newcastle on Sunday, but then has a good looking run-in with matches against Norwich, Watford, and Aston Villa fellow relegation battlers.
Hammers manager Moyes said: “Well, one win isn’t enough. It’s just one win, we’ve got to win more if we’re to stay a Premier League team, but it was going to be difficult to pick up wins.
The video assistant referee who ruled out a Tomas Soucek goal for a slight offside, and a penalty which Willian converted, had to tackle a harsh decision by West Ham. Michail Antonio equalized them with a Soucek header and went ahead before Willian curled into a free-kick.
But with a minute to go substitute Yarmolenko, this season’s forgotten man by injury, sliced through Antonio Rudiger and smashed the winner home.
Moyes added: “Yarmolenko wasn’t fit when I arrived and didn’t practice, so I only saw him after a lockdown in training, but he’s trained every day and did a lot of good things. We have signed Jarrod Bowen whilst who plays in his place and has had a really good start to his time here. I’ve had a chance to see Yarma now, he gives me good competition. Jarrod did one, and Yarma scored one, and I’m pleased with both.”
The defeat meant Chelsea missed the opportunity of leapfrogging Leicester into third place.
Coach Frank Lampard said: “We now have six games ahead of us and it was no great surprise. When you’re playing in the Premier League and make mistakes if you own a manager but don’t do anything at the top of the pitch for it, then it can happen.”
