Chelsea to sign Napoli to Dries Mertens, who will be in the summer without a deal with the Italian sport.
Through the January transfer window, the Blues were credited with an interest in Belgium International but Mertens stayed in Napoli where he scored six goals and five assists in the term’s 21 league outings.
However, Frank Lampard’s side reportedly did not give up in their hunt for Mertens but could face Inter Milan’s pressure to secure the striker’s services. RAI journalist Paolo Paganini, speaking to Area Napoli, said, “Would Mertens leave? If he did, Napoli would take a double shot (sign two players instead of the one they are expected to do).
“Inter and Chelsea re-launched the Belgian [their efforts to sign], giving him a higher fee.” The 32-year-old scored 121 goals in 309 appearances in all Napoli’s competitions.
