Celta Vigo beat Real Sociedad Champions League-chasing 1-0 away Wednesday from home as they kept steering away from La Liga’s relegation zone.
Celta’s talismanic forward Iago Aspas scored the game’s only goal from the penalty spot on the halftime stroke after being felled in the area by Diego Llorente, who also gave Real Madrid a spot-kick in Sunday’s 2-1 loss.
The victory followed Sunday’s 6-0 thrashing of Alaves, putting Celta, 16th, seven points off the relegation zone. Meanwhile, Sociedad ‘s top-four aspirations are fast fading as they remain in seventh, six behind fourth-placed Seville.
With a hard-fought victory at Alaves in a game with few chances for both sides, Osasuna practically secured their protection in La Liga.
Toni Lato, on Valencia loan, struck the winning goal in what was to be the only shot on target recorded in the game, in the 64th minute. The result moves Osasuna up to 38 points and with seven remaining season matches, they are now 12 points clear from the drop zone and have secured their top-flight status with all but one.
Alaves remain on 35 points and while their position in La Liga is not under immediate threat, this is their third setback in four weeks, following a stunning six-goal defeat at Celta Vigo on Sunday.
This will also be a cause for concern that the side of Asier Garitano was not even able to pick up a goal shot at their home stadium for the whole match.
