A matter of hours after Chancellor Angela Merkel and the prime ministers of the 16 states of Germany had declared that they had given the green light for the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 to restart earliest in mid-May, news emerged from just when the first games are to be played.
Several news organizations announced on Wednesday night that they had received confirmation that the German Football League (DFL) had agreed on May 15 to restart the match.
The Bundesliga’s 2019-20 season is scheduled to start on Friday, May 15, following the German government’s approval of the medical protocol. They will be the first of the five major European Leagues to get back on the field since the coronavirus pandemic shut down sport in mid-March.
The German Government has released today a straightforward medical policy, ensuring that the season is ready to begin ‘from the second half of May.’ A definite date has now been set for the fixtures and is Friday 15 May, as stated by a number of German outlets, including Bild and Kicker. Not only the first division but also the second tier, should be able to get back on track from May 15.
Clubs have been informed of the date and may initiate preparatory training.
Series A clubs are expected to begin group training on May 18 but will not discuss the medical practice until tomorrow’s meeting.
Karl Lauterbach, a leading health expert with Chancellor Merkel’s coalition partners, the Social Democrats, slammed the decision as “disappointing and incorrect,” saying it was motivated by corporate interests.
Bavarian state leader Markus Söder, however, has defended the move.
