Hans-Dieter Flick, boss of Bayern Munich, was proud to see his side back up their victory over Borussia Dortmund with a clinical 5-0 win over Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Taking ‘Der Klassiker’ 1-0 in midweek gave Bayern one hand on the title of the Bundesliga and, in seeing visitors off to the Allianz Arena on Saturday, Flick ‘s side underlined their desire to hold on.
Robert Lewandowski’s two goals, Benjamin Pavard’s header, and Alphonso Davies’ solo effort preceded Mathias Jorgensen’s own opening goal to leave the hosts 10 points clear.
“It was important that we showed that we wouldn’t ease off after the match against Dortmund on Tuesday,” a satisfied Flick said.
“We’ve seen that from the very first second. And I’m very, really pleased with our results. We were very violent and did not give the slightest chance to our opponents. You can see how the players drive each other and inspire each other.
“There are still a couple of matches ahead of us. Now, we are in a good position.
David Alaba mirrored his manager’s feelings and said to his team: “We are very optimistic, the mood is very positive and you can see that. We want to win every game, we are very competitive, we want to come out on top at the end of the season, that’s what makes us stand out.’
The only drawback for Bayern was an adductor injury to Lucas Hernandez, who was replaced at half-time.
Head coach Uwe Rosler, who was threatened with relegation, complained about the end of an undefeated six-game run in the league, stretching back to before the coronavirus shutdown.
“It’s a little disappointing that we have destroyed the positive feeling we’ve had from the last few months,” he said.
