After keeping a 0-0 draw in Seville on Friday night, Barcelona defender Gerard Pique seemed to give up hope that his side will retain the LaLiga title this season.
Two crucial points in the title race were dropped by Lionel Messi and Co, giving rivals Real Madrid the chance to overtake them at the top when they take on Real Sociedad Sunday.
Speaking after the game, Pique was pessimistic about the chances of winning a third consecutive domestic title in Barcelona.
He said, “The draw leaves us in a position where we are no longer dependent on ourselves and it’s hard to imagine that Real Madrid will drop points when looking at the fixtures but we’ll still give everything to try and win.”
Real Barca trail by three points and if they beat Real Sociedad on Sunday, because of their superior head-to-head record, they will overtake the Catalans at the top of the standings.
Zinedine Zidane’s side beat Valencia 3-0 with a superb second-half display on Thursday and won 3-1 against Eibar back in their first game and the extra time off allowed Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio to come back from injury.
On their return, Barca had beaten Real Mallorca and defeated Leganes 2-0, even though they sometimes looked sluggish in both matches.
Pique said they deserved to beat Seville in the third position, and cursed that they could not win.
“It was a very competitive game and we didn’t play badly but it feels like we dropped two points because we had more chances than them and they looked tired towards the end. But they’re third in the table, they ‘re a good team so we shouldn’t be shocked it’s been hard,” he added
Barca coach Quique Setien said he was hopeful that Real would also mess up and said that in the heat of the moment, Pique had made his downbeat prediction.
