Days withdrawn from winning the 2019-20 Bundesliga title with Bayern Munich, Vancouver Whitecaps export Alphonso Davies was named Rookie of the Year in the top flight for Germany.
Davies, 19, has emerged as one of the best young prospects in the world, shining for Bayern at left-back. He has featured in 40 matches across all this season’s competitions, contributing three goals and nine assists.
The Bundesliga’s Rookie of the Year award combined votes which broke down as follows: fans 40%, clubs 30%, experts 30%. Those in the running were Jonjoe Kenny right back at FC Schalke, Erling Haaland forward at Borussia Dortmund, 1. FC Koln winger Ismail Jakobs and Borussia Monchengladbach.

The final pool was collected at different points during the 2019-20 season after each received a Rookie of the Month nod. Players on Matchday 1 had to be younger than 23 to be qualified and in no previous campaign had they started a Bundesliga match. Players would not have been able to play more than 450 minutes before the current Bundesliga season either.
Davies had signed a Homegrown Player contract with Vancouver in 2016 before moving to Bayern. He scored eight goals and dished out 12 assists through 65 MLS appearances, prompting a $22 million move from the German powerhouse club to come calling.
Davies already has five goals for Canada and eight assists across 17 caps. He is one of Concacaf’s top teams, alongside Jonathan David.
