1 June marks one year after the death of Jose Antonio Reyes in a horrific car accident which also claimed the lives of his brother, Jonathon, in the back seat. In a critical condition, Juan Manuel Calderón, who was also in the car, was hospitalized. It has been confirmed that when the car was on fire, Calderón was badly burnt to try to save Reyes.
From 2004 until 2007, Reyes played for Arsenal.Seville, Real Madrid, Benfica, Espanyol, Cordoba, Xinjiang Tianshan Leopard, and Extremadura were also represented.
Reyes may have only been with us for a brief period, but he left a bigger impression on Arsenal fans’ hearts than those who followed and stayed longer.
The incident occurred to the day almost a year ago, on 1 June 2019. The file explaining the cause of this incident, in which the cousin of the player, Jonathan Reyes, also died, and Juan Manuel Calderón was seriously wounded, was demanded to be closed because of the difficulty of continuing the investigation because of the individual responsible for the crime who passed away.
Following the forensic measures taken to clarify the details of the crash that occurred on the A-376 highway between Seville and Utrera when Reyes returned from Almendralejo (Badajoz) after training with Extremadura, the authorities are seeing indicators of a possible reckless homicide crime under Article 142.1 of the Penal Code, as well as a case of extreme recklessness causing injury.
