Bayern Munich ended a four-match winless run as they produced one of the comfortable football results of the weekend in the Bundesliga. Before the crucial Bundesliga encounter against Borussia Dortmund next weekend and the crucial Champions League group match against Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday, Jamal Musiala put on an outstanding performance for a victory that gave him more confidence.
“It’s still too early, in my opinion. We need to play more of those types of games before we can declare that we are back,” Musiala said. “The team as a whole wants victory today. Each and every one of us was under pressure. We all exhibited today our desire to be the best. Bayern constantly feels the pressure.”
Throughout the entire game, the 19-year-old attacking midfielder harassed the Leverkusen defense before scoring in the 17th minute following a one-two with Mueller and a shot that was slightly deflected. He then assisted Mane in ending his goalless streak of five games by finding the Senegalese in the area, where he deflected another shot past Hradecky for his first ever home goal. Musiala has already scored five goals and assisted on three more in the league.
Bayern’s fourth goal came in the 84th minute when Hradecky slipped in the box and sent the ball straight into Mueller’s path. With 15 points after the victory, Bayern moved into the second position in the Bundesliga, two points behind Union Berlin, who will face Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday. Bayer Leverkusen, a fellow Champions League team who will play Porto on Tuesday, fell further into problems and is now ranked 16th in the league. After placing third the previous season, coach Gerardo Seoane’s team has only won one of their eight Bundesliga games so far.
When Bayer Leverkusen lost, they fell into the relegation zone, ending Bayern’s worst Bundesliga run in 20 years. Meanwhile, Bayern ended their worst Bundesliga run in 40 years.
