Netherlands legend Arjen Robben has announced his retirement from football for the second time. Robben first retired two years ago before changing his mind. He came out of retirement to join his boyhood club Groningen in the Eredivisie. Robben has been riddled with injuries since coming out of retirement. The coronavirus pandemic has not made his life any easier.
Robben won two Premier League titles with Chelsea along with a FA Cup and two league cups. He also played for PSV Eindhoven, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich in a stellar career. Robben made 96 appearances for the Netherlands scoring 37 goals in the process. He reached the final of the World Cup in 2010 but lost out to a late Andres Iniesta goal.
“I have decided to end my active football career, it was a very difficult choice. I want to thank everyone for their heart-warming support!” Netherlands legend Arjen Robben said on Twitter.
Robben was brought to English football by Claudio Ranieri. The partnership did not last long as the latter was sacked after a season. Jose Mourinho was brought in to replace the Italian. Under Mourinho, Robben played a huge part in two consecutive Premier League title wins in 2005 and 2006.
He moved to La Liga with Real Madrid in 2007, winning the La Liga in his first season. Robben joined Bayern Munich in 2009. It was here that Robben made a name for himself. He scored the crucial winner against Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund in the 2013 Champions League final. Bayern would go on to win the treble that year. He played for Bayern for a decade until his first retirement. Robben retired from international football in 2017 when the Netherlands failed to qualify for the World Cup.
